About Jazan Heritage Village and its history

A village presenting the traditional building styles and life of the Jazan region.

Jazan Heritage Village is an open-air cultural site on the Southern Corniche of the city of Jazan, in the far south-west of Saudi Arabia. It was created to give a physical picture of the traditional ways of building and living in the different environments of the Jazan Region.

The terrain of the region ranges from high mountains in the east to the coastal Tihama plain and the Farasan Islands offshore, and each environment has its own style of building. The village presents full-size examples of these styles. They include the mountain house, built of stone over several storeys; the conical Tihama hut, made of wood and thatch, plastered with mud on the inside and decorated with coloured dishes; and the Farasani house, built of coral stone and ornamented with carved plaster.

Visitors move between these houses and see the furniture, household utensils, clothing and farming and fishing tools that people once used. They can watch craftspeople practising handicrafts such as pottery and palm-leaf weaving, and traditional food and folk performances are offered during festival seasons.
