About Jabal Ferwa and its history

A peak in the Sarawat Mountains near Dhahran al-Janub, about 3,000 metres high and among the highest in the Kingdom.

Jabal Ferwa is a mountain peak in the Sarawat range of south-western Saudi Arabia. It is located near the governorate of Dhahran al-Janub in Asir Province, not far from the border with Yemen. It reaches about 3,000 metres above sea level and is counted among the highest peaks in the Kingdom. Some measurements put it close to, or slightly above, the height of Jabal Sawda near Abha.

The mountain belongs to the south-western highlands of the Arabian Peninsula, a range that rises steeply from the Tihamah coastal plain in the west and then slopes down gradually towards the interior plateaus in the east. These highlands receive more rain than the rest of the country. Agricultural terraces built on the slopes by local people over the centuries are common throughout the area.

Juniper trees and mountain plants cover parts of the slopes, and old stone villages and small farms are scattered around the mountain. The mountain is visited by hikers and travellers from the region and beyond, and it is a natural landmark valued by the people of Dhahran al-Janub.
