About Ras Um Sid and its history

A dive site and rocky shore in Sharm El Sheikh.

Ras Um Sid is a rocky headland and dive site on the coast of Sharm El Sheikh in South Sinai. It lies at the southern end of the town, below the Um El Sid plateau and near the lighthouse that stands on the cliff edge. The headland overlooks the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba, where its waters meet those of the Red Sea.

The site has been known since the early days of diving in Sharm El Sheikh and hotels and tourist facilities later grew up on the plateau as the town expanded. The shore consists of a shallow reef flat ending at an edge beyond which the reef wall drops to considerable depths. It is one of the few sites in the area where diving is possible directly from the shore.

The site is known for the large gorgonian sea fans on its slope and for the variety of fish attracted by the currents passing the headland. Ras Um Sid is one of the well-known dive sites of Sharm El Sheikh and an example of the fringing reefs on which the town's reputation was built.
