About Howard Carter House and its history
The house where Howard Carter lived on Luxor's west bank, now a museum.
Howard Carter House is a historic house on the west bank of the Nile at Luxor, standing on a low rise near the start of the road leading to the Valley of the Kings. It is the house in which the British archaeologist Howard Carter lived during his years of work in the Theban necropolis, and it has been turned into a museum.
The house was built in the early twentieth century of mud brick in the local style. From here Carter directed the excavations financed by Lord Carnarvon, which ended in 1922 with the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. He continued to live in the house during the years needed to record and remove the contents of the tomb. After decades of neglect the house was restored and opened to visitors in the early twenty-first century, and it was renovated again for the centenary of the discovery.
Visitors see the rooms furnished much as they were in Carter's time, including the study, the bedroom, the kitchen and the darkroom used for developing photographs. A full-size replica of the burial chamber of Tutankhamun has been installed beside the house.
